Swanzy Writes: The Game Changing Series; Increasing Female Representation in Student Leadership

We are witnessing a new epoch where the walls that once confined women to the shadows of history now crumble, paving the way for an era of progress, diversity, and empowerment.

In recent years, we have seen a significant shift in the dynamics of Student leadership. Women are shattering glass ceilings, breaking barriers, and ascending to positions of influence and power at an unprecedented pace. From Departments to Faculty, Halls and College Student Associations, women are leading with determination, resilience, and brilliance.

This transformation is not a coincidence; it is the result of relentless advocacy, perseverance, and the unwavering belief in the capabilities of women. We recognize that the increasing rate of females in leadership roles is not merely about fulfilling quotas or political correctness; it is about tapping into a vast reservoir of untapped potential, wisdom, and talent.

We celebrate trailblazers like Louise Carol Serwaa Donkor from University of Ghana, Yvonne Osei Adobea from KNUST and Hussein Rukaya from UDS-Tamale  who have paved the way for this progress to be felt at the SRC level , they like many women refused to accept the status quo and challenged the norms. But our work is not done; we must continue to advocate for the removal of systemic barriers that hinder women’s progress. We must address the unconscious biases that may still persist and ensure that opportunities are truly equal for all.

To the women leaders among us, I say: Your achievements inspire us all. Your resilience in the face of adversity is a beacon of hope. Your commitment to driving positive change serves as a guiding light for generations to come. Your leadership is not just a testament to your abilities; it is a testament to the incredible heights humanity can reach when we embrace diversity and inclusion and I look forward to working with you next year.

As we continue on this journey towards a more equitable world, let us remember that it is not a battle of genders but a collective endeavor to harness the best of our human potential. By standing together, breaking down barriers, and uplifting each other, we can create a world where leadership knows no gender boundaries, where all individuals have the opportunity to thrive and contribute.

The increasing rate of females in leadership roles is a cause for celebration, but it is also a call to action. Let us embrace this momentum and redouble our efforts to create a future where all voices are heard, all talents are nurtured, and all dreams have the chance to soar. Together, we can build a world that is more just, prosperous, and harmonious. Universities in Ghana have a role to play in that world; together we can change the game.
