‘Opinions are free, justice isn’t’ — DJ Mensah claps back at critics over Sarkodie’s lawsuit against Ecobank

Sarkodie’s decision to pursue legal action against Ecobank Ghana Limited has stirred a flurry of reactions across social media, with many weighing in on the matter from differing angles.

The debate is sharply divided. On one hand, critics argue the lawsuit lacks merit since the image used wasn’t Sarkodie himself but a lookalike. On the other, supporters insist the rapper has a strong case rooted in intellectual property law, citing the unauthorized commercial use of a likeness resembling his.

Amid the swirling opinions, Sarkodie’s official disc jockey, DJ Mensah, has stepped into the conversation. Posting on X, he offered a pointed reminder about the difference between public opinion and legal judgment.

“I like how everyone’s suddenly a legal expert. Your opinion isn’t the law … 2 different things. Opinions are free, but justice isn’t. Until a ruling is made, all we have is speculation,” he wrote, calling for restraint and deference to the court process.

The controversy traces back to a legal filing at the Commercial Division of the High Court in Accra. In the documents, Sarkodie alleges that Ecobank used an image strikingly similar to his in an advertisement without securing his consent—an act he claims violates his intellectual property rights.

He further asserts that this unauthorized use has damaged his reputation and resulted in financial losses. As part of the suit, the award-winning rapper is seeking general damages, a permanent injunction to bar further use of the disputed image, and a directive for the removal of all related promotional content across digital and print platforms.

At the time of this report, Ecobank has not publicly responded to the lawsuit against them.
