D-Black reveals why many artistes struggle after leaving record labels
Ghanaian rapper and entrepreneur Desmond Blackmore, popularly known as D-Black, has shared his perspective on why many artistes in Ghana face challenges after parting ways with record labels.
In a recent interview with ZionFelix, the Black Avenue Muzik CEO offered insight drawn from personal experience, having worked with several artistes who have exited his label over the years.
Reflecting on the trend, D-Black emphasized that the difficulties artistes encounter are often not because of the labels themselves. Referencing both his own label and Lynx Entertainment, two of Ghana’s most prominent imprints, he clarified that these platforms are helmed by individuals who command significant industry respect. Once an artiste steps away from that structure, D-Black noted, they often lose access to the support systems and credibility that helped elevate their careers.
“An exit is just an exit,” he remarked, suggesting that the impact largely depends on the circumstances surrounding the departure. He stressed that how an artiste leaves a label can greatly influence their path forward.
When asked whether he plans to shut down Black Avenue Muzik, D-Black firmly responded, “No.” However, he acknowledged that the label is undergoing a shift in strategy and direction.
He also opened up about the departure of some of his former signees, including Joey B, Sefa, Dee Moneey, and DJ Breezy, offering a rare look into the dynamics behind the scenes of one of Ghana’s most recognized music labels.
