Churches must stop labelling all secular music as sinful – Prophet Kumchacha
Prophet Kumchacha is challenging long-held beliefs in Ghana’s Christian community, urging churches to stop casting secular artistes aside simply because they don’t perform gospel music.
In a recent interview on Okay FM, the preacher, born Nicholas Osei, pushed back against the blanket condemnation of secular songs, arguing that many are filled with meaning, morality, and inspiration.
“We are all in this world. But what the Bible meant by ‘worldly’ is ‘senseless’ music that encourages immorality,” he said, clarifying that not all music outside the gospel genre promotes vice.
For Kumchacha, churches are failing to distinguish between truly harmful content and songs that, despite being secular, uplift listeners with wisdom and social value. He praised veteran highlife legends Amakye Dede and KK Kabobo, saying their music holds just as much weight as gospel tunes.
“Their music is as good as gospel songs because it inspires and educates. We shouldn’t reject them,” he stated.
He didn’t shy away from criticising religious institutions for what he described as inconsistent standards, accusing some churches of dismissing secular artistes based solely on stereotypes and assumptions.
“Because you believe someone sings secular songs, you tag them as ‘worldly’ and reject them. That’s wrong,” Prophet Kumchacha added.
