South African academics and research professionals now have the chance to elevate their careers through the Fulbright South African Research Scholar Program (SARSP). This prestigious initiative invites university faculty and experts from research institutions across South Africa to engage in advanced research for a period of three to nine months at a U.S. university or research institute.
The program aims to enhance academic capacity at South African institutions by providing scholars access to world-class resources and collaborative networks in the United States. Selected participants will conduct high-impact research in their respective fields, with projects beginning between August 1, 2026, and March 31, 2027, and concluding no later than December 31, 2027.
Who Is Eligible?
To apply, candidates must:
- Hold a doctoral or terminal degree in their discipline by the time of application.
- Have at least three years of university teaching experience and a strong record of academic publishing.
- Be a South African citizen or a permanent resident with a minimum of five years’ residency in the country.
(Note: Dual citizens of South Africa and the U.S. are not eligible.)
- Demonstrate proficiency in English to successfully carry out research and collaborate with U.S. peers.
- Be in good health and prepared to submit a Medical History and Examination Report upon selection.
- Be from any academic field except clinical medical research involving direct patient contact.
- Have limited or no prior experience in the U.S. and not have received a previous Fulbright Scholar award.

Applications for doctoral dissertation research, postdoctoral work immediately following a PhD, or professional travel are not eligible.
Scholars who have previously applied unsuccessfully are encouraged to reapply with updated materials, including revised research proposals and new letters of recommendation.
What the Grant Covers
Fulbright SARSP awardees receive comprehensive support, including:
- A monthly stipend adjusted to the cost of living in the U.S. host city.
- Round-trip airfare and excess baggage allowance for return travel.
- A settling-in allowance.
- A professional allowance for books, conference fees, and academic resources.
- Basic health insurance.
- Visa application fee reimbursement.
Please note: Laboratory fees are not automatically covered and may only be funded on a limited case-by-case basis, depending on budget availability.
Application Process
Applications must be submitted online. The complete application package includes:
- A clear, well-structured research proposal, outlining objectives and methodology in terms accessible to a generalist review panel.
- Three confidential letters of reference, submitted directly by referees through the online system. (No emailed or posted letters will be accepted.)
- A Letter of Invitation from a U.S. institution is strongly encouraged, but not mandatory.
Applicants unfamiliar with U.S. institutions may request placement assistance from the Fulbright Program. Affiliation with one’s alma mater is discouraged and may not be honored.
