Ghanaian media personality MzGee has pushed back forcefully against criticism over her decision to have a child outside marriage, insisting her life choices are hers alone.
On her Gee O’Clock program, she reflected on the societal pressures that tie a woman’s worth to marriage and childbearing. “As a young lady growing up, the prayer was always to get married, have children, and live happily ever after. But life had a different plan for me,” the brodcaster said.
After her divorce, she recalled enduring constant reminders about her “ticking biological clock,” with relatives, friends, and even strangers urging her to remarry and have children quickly.
By the age of 38, still unmarried, MzGee decided to chart her own course. On January 13, 2025, she revealed the birth of her son. Instead of receiving widespread congratulations, her announcement drew backlash from some who accused her of “going against God’s order.”
She pushed back at those critics with a sharp response: “Who made you God over us? Why do you use God to judge women like me? God is merciful, not you. I will thank God for my child any day.”
In her remarks, MzGee also addressed what she sees as hypocrisy in how society treats men and women differently. “When men have children outside wedlock, society looks away. But when women do it, suddenly everyone becomes a judge. Even women join the chorus against us. We are tired,” she said.
Calling for empathy rather than condemnation, she urged people to understand the struggles of divorced women or those still waiting for marriage. “If you know what divorce feels like, or what it means to wait endlessly for marriage that never comes, you will not cast stones. Don’t shame us, pray for us. At my age, I know what I am doing. This is my life and my choice,” she further stated.
