Sam George Warns DStv After Price-Cut Dispute With MultiChoice Ghana Escalates

Sam George, Ghana’s Communications Minister

Ghana’s standoff with MultiChoice over DStv pricing escalated sharply after Minister for Communications, Technology and Innovation Samuel Nartey George rebuked the company for publicly rejecting claims of an agreed fee cut.

MultiChoice, in a September 5 statement, maintained it had “not agreed to a price reduction,” though it would fully engage with the Ministry through the newly formed Working Committee. The broadcaster underscored that any adjustment must safeguard the sustainability of its operations.

Sam George countered within hours, blasting the statement on social media as an affront to subscribers. “Let me be clear, I have no intention to continue tolerating the disrespect to Ghanaians by DStv. If MultiChoice is not interested as they claim in their last statement, in discussing a reduction in prices as they had indicated to me, we would proceed to effect the shutdown tomorrow as indicated,” he declared.

The minister insisted the company had earlier sought a pause on enforcement actions while talks progressed. With that understanding now in question, he signaled regulatory penalties could begin immediately.

George closed his remarks by affirming Ghana’s readiness to welcome investors “only for companies willing to respect national laws and institutions,” warning that defiance would trigger swift government action.
