Guru Claims UG SRC Was His Training Ground to Lead Ghana

Ghanaian rapper, Guru

Ghanaian rapper and outgoing University of Ghana SRC president, Guru, believes his time in student leadership has equipped him for roles far beyond the university campus.

During an interview with Nana Romeo on Okay FM, Guru made a case for experience as a crucial stepping stone toward national leadership, stressing that competence must be backed by proof of readiness.

“If you want to venture into a new business or job, or role, you have to show proof that you know what the work is about and that you can do it. The experience is also necessary. That is why people go to school before applying for jobs: to prove that they can do the work,” he averred.

The artiste, known for hits like ‘Alkayida’, pointed out that many of Ghana’s influential leaders began in student politics. He suggested that the University of Ghana’s SRC presidency has long been a training ground for those who later serve as presidents, lawmakers, or ministers.

“From what we have seen, anyone who can be the SRC president of the University of Ghana can rule Ghana, any day, anytime. The majority of our ministers and MPs were heavily involved in school politics. That is why they are good at their duties. They garnered the experience,” he said.

Guru added that his term in office has taught him crucial leadership attributes such as patience, negotiation, and an appreciation for differing opinions. Qualities, he says, that transcend campus politics.

“So, even I, going to the university and being the SRC president, helped me learn endurance, tolerance, and understanding the process of leadership,” he stated.
