Bishop Bonegas, founder and General Overseer of the Great Fire Pentecostal Church, has sharply criticised the government and the Office of the Special Prosecutor over what he describes as a failure to defend Ghanaian citizens, following the arrest of Abu Trica.
Speaking in a video posted on X recently, the outspoken cleric argued that state institutions have fallen short of their responsibilities, leaving citizens exposed and unprotected.
His comments were triggered by the recent arrest of the Sewdru-based entrepreneur by the FBI, over allegations that he played a role in a scheme that defrauded elderly victims of more than $8 million. Bishop Bonegas questioned why a foreign law enforcement agency was allowed to take the lead in arresting a Ghanaian national, while local authorities appeared powerless in other high-profile cases.
“The problems of this country start from the leaders down to the grassroots. They said Ken Ofori-Atta squandered government money and ran away to the USA, yet up to now they haven’t been able to extradite him. But see how they have given Americans the chance to arrest Abu Trica,” he said.
The cleric contrasted the situation with what he described as the firm stance of the United States in protecting its own people, arguing that Ghana’s leadership lacks the same resolve.
“Your leaders cannot protect you. They have failed you as citizens,” Bishop Bonegas further stated.
