What was meant to be a joyful return to Ghana for a major Christian gathering turned into a period of fear for gospel music veteran Esther Smith, who says she was the target of disturbing threats ahead of the event.
In an interview on PAAM TV UK, the celebrated singer recounted how her preparations to travel from the United Kingdom for the highly anticipated Alpha Hour Convocation in December 2025 were interrupted by alarming messages from an unknown individual. She said the texts, which came from a phone number bearing a Nigerian area code, warned that her life was at risk.
Esther Smith revealed that the sender demanded €300,000, presenting it as the price for stopping what was described as a plan to harm her. She explained that she chose to speak openly about the matter, despite her management’s preference to keep the issue out of the public eye.
She said the person behind the messages claimed to be acting on behalf of people she referred to as her enemies and went further to threaten the takeover of her YouTube channel as part of the intimidation.
According to the singer, her team initially shielded her from some of the details surrounding the threats so she could concentrate on her spiritual assignment and performance without distraction.
She also disclosed that the experience was not new, noting that she had received similar threatening messages at other times in her career.
Given the gravity of the situation, Esther Smith said security was provided by officers from the National Intelligence Bureau during her appearance at the 2025 Alpha Hour programme at the Accra Sports Stadium.
She ended by appealing to her supporters, friends, and loved ones to continue praying for her.
