Provisional Results Show Bawumia Clinching NPP Flagbearer Slot Again

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged as the New Patriotic Party’s presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections after sweeping past his rivals in Saturday’s presidential primary.

Provisional results compiled at the National Collation Centre at the Electoral Commission headquarters in Accra show the former vice-president securing a decisive first-round victory. He polled 110,643 votes, equivalent to 56.5 per cent of all valid ballots cast, comfortably exceeding the 50 per cent mark required to avoid a second round.

The outcome hands Dr Bawumia the party’s flagbearer slot for a second straight time and brings the internal contest to an early close.

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, finished as the closest challenger with 46,554 votes, representing 23.8 per cent. He was followed by the Member of Parliament for Abetifi and former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong, who garnered 36,303 votes, or 18.5 per cent.

The remaining contenders trailed far behind. Bosomtwe MP and former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum received 1,999 votes, accounting for 1.0 per cent, while former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong picked up 402 votes, representing 0.2 per cent.

In total, 195,901 valid votes were recorded nationwide during the primary, with 561 ballots rejected, according to a Graphic Online report.
