Kofi Jam, manager of Ghanaian rapper Medikal, has sparked renewed debate about rap recognition in Ghana’s music industry after a strongly worded post on X calling for greater acknowledgement of the artiste’s influence and consistency.
In his post, Kofi Jam argued that Medikal remains central to the survival and relevance of rap music in the country, while also highlighting a long-standing gap in the Telecel Ghana Music Awards’ top honours for rappers.
“Artists like Medikal are the reason rap music is still alive in this country. The last time a rapper won Artiste of the Year at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards was in 2016, a decade ago,” he wrote.
He further stressed that, in his view, it is time the awards scheme reconsidered Medikal’s place among the industry’s most impactful figures. According to him, the rapper’s output and visibility over the years have remained steady, even in the wake of what has often been described as his 2017 “Seven nominations” snub at the TGMA.
The post has since added to ongoing conversations about how Ghana’s award platforms recognise hip-hop and rap artistes, particularly those who have maintained commercial success and cultural relevance outside of major award wins.
