A simple hotel snack nearly derailed what should have been another smooth overseas performance for famous Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie, who has now revisited the incident with humour and honesty.
Speaking on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, the Sarkcess Music boss told presenters Doreen Avio and Kwame Dadzie that the most uncomfortable show of his career started hours before he appeared on stage in the United States. Unbeknown to him at the time, he had eaten a biscuit laced with marijuana, an experience he said left him disoriented and uneasy throughout the performance.
Sarkodie explained that upon arriving at his hotel, he and his manager, Angel Town, were welcomed with a hospitality hamper stocked with assorted drinks and snacks. Feeling hungry and unaware of what was inside, he casually took a bite.
“I got to my hotel they had a hamper for me. And I had no idea what the hamper was. It has drinks, biscuits and everything. I took bites of the biscuits when I was hungry not knowing it had marijuana, and I have not taken marijuana before. Angel finished his and came for more from me,” he opened up.
Things began to feel strange soon after. Sarkodie recalled noticing his manager laughing excessively at situations that were not amusing, before he himself started feeling out of sorts. Backstage, his confusion deepened to the point where he asked members of his team to explain how far his seat was from the main stage.
When it was finally time to perform, the rapper said his senses betrayed him. Every song felt unusually slow, making him believe the show was going badly, even though the audience later insisted he delivered a solid performance.
“That’s the worst performance I’ve ever had. Because in my head all the songs sounded slow,” the 40-year-old rapper disclosed.
Looking back, Sarkodie said the incident reinforced a lesson many performers quietly understand. An artiste can meet or even exceed audience expectations while personally feeling dissatisfied with their own delivery.
Away from the memorable mishap, Sarkodie is turning his attention to preparations for his annual Rapperholic concert, scheduled for December 25, 2025, at the Grand Arena.
