Grief has settled over Bongo and the Upper East Region following the passing of Mr Joseph Abaa Akaseke, the District Chief Executive for Bongo.

He died on Sunday evening, February 22, at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment after a short illness. The exact cause of death has not been made public. His death was confirmed to Graphic Online by the Bongo Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Alhaji Tahiru Aberinga.

The announcement has stirred deep sorrow across the district. Residents, party faithful and colleagues have described the loss as sudden and heartbreaking, reflecting on the vacuum his absence leaves in local governance.

Mr Akaseke was often spoken of as a hands-on administrator with a firm commitment to Bongo’s advancement. Those who worked with him point to his drive to strengthen basic services and secure greater infrastructural investment for the area. He collaborated with traditional leaders, local authorities and national representatives to confront persistent challenges in education, healthcare and access to safe drinking water.

His journey as District Chief Executive began in April 2025, when Assembly Members gave him an emphatic mandate, endorsing his nomination with 52 out of 54 valid votes. The margin was seen as a clear vote of confidence in his capacity to lead the district.

In his confirmation address, he pledged to pursue inclusive and participatory governance to ensure that Bongo secured its fair share of national development resources.

Since news of his passing emerged, social media platforms have been flooded with tributes celebrating his energy, accessibility and determination to improve living conditions across the district.
