Residents Of Brosankro Drink Unwholesome Water

The Queen Mother of Benu Nkwanta in the Sunyani East Municipality of the Bono Region, Nana Ampem Konadu Yiadom is urging the incoming Municipal Chief Executive for the Municipality to make the provision of potable water for the residents of Brosankro and its environs a priority.

It is estimated that 2.2 billion people globally do not have access to potable water contrary to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 aimed at achieving a universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all by 2030. In Ghana it is also estimated that close to 10 million people do not have access to potable water.

The story is not different at Brosankro, a farming Community in the Sunyani East Municipality of the Bono Region. With a population close to 200, the residents drink from this drain. The residents have to cross the busy Sunyani-Atronie Road daily and walk for about a kilometre to this drain to fetch water for their chores.

According to them, they have no option than to drink from this as there is not a single borehole in the area.

Mary Azongo, a resident of Brosankro in an interview with First News said, “When we drink this water, we encounter many challenges. When drinking it you could smell a scent but we have no option that is why we are drinking it. When you are cooking with it, it forms a dark foam. You have to clear it. There is no water here so I am appealing to the Sunyani Municipal Assembly to come and construct a borehole for us because we are suffering. Crossing the road to fetch water is dangerous. A car nearly knocked down my child. The Sunyani Municipal Assembly should come and construct a borehole for the people of Brosankro.”

The Queen mother of Benu Nkwanta, Nana Ampem Konadu Yiadom who oversees the Brosankro Community is thus urging the incoming Municipal Chief Executive for the Sunyani East Municipality to treat the water situation at the community as urgent when he or she assumes office.

“The challenge is that there is infection in the water. When they drink the water, they get many challenges. Secondly, crossing the road is dangerous. Vehicles have been knocking them. I want to appeal to the incoming MCE that he should have a look at Benu Nkwanta, Brosankro and its adjoining communities including Kwasi Mfum and Preprakrom because water is a major challenge here.

The Assembly Member for Antwikrom Benu Nkwanta Electoral Area, Isaac Kologo Salifu tells First News steps he has taken to ensure the residents get potable water.

“I have taken several steps to ensure that the people get potable to drink. I have mentioned it several times at Assembly meetings but nothing has happened. We are hoping that the incoming MCE would take a look at the Brosankro to give them potable water.”
