Family source confirms the death of Akua Donkor

Akua Donkor dies

A family source has confirmed that Akua Donkor, the presidential candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), has passed away.

She died on Monday night at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, also known as Ridge Hospital, in Accra, according to a report by Graphic Online.

Madam Donkor first sought treatment at the Nsawam Government Hospital in the Eastern Region for respiratory issues. She was then referred to Ridge Hospital in Accra, where she arrived around 7 p.m. By 10 p.m. on Monday, she had passed away.

Just two weeks ago, Madam Akua Donkor attended an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting in Accra, where she made headlines by expressing her frustration over what she felt were derogatory comments about her qualifications as a presidential candidate for the 2024 election. She was particularly displeased with ongoing remarks regarding her lack of formal classroom education.

Madam Akua Donkor founded the Ghana Freedom Party in 2011, officially registering it in 2012, after several attempts to become an Assembly member in her hometown of Kwabre in the Ashanti Region. In 2004, she ran for Parliament in Kwabre East, competing against the late Emmanuel Owusu Ansah, a former Judicial Secretary and Ashanti Regional Minister.

Following two unsuccessful bids for Parliament in 2004 and 2008, Madam Donkor decided to pursue a higher political role, founding the GFP and entering the presidential race in 2011. She had filed to contest the 2024 presidential election under the GFP banner and was actively participating in IPAC meetings.

With her passing, her running mate for the 2024 presidential election, Kwabena Agyeman Appiah Kubi, also known in the media as Roman Fada, is expected to step into her role.
