Ghana confirms two more Mpox cases, bringing the total to four

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed two new Mpox infections, increasing the country’s case count to four. The latest cases were identified in the Greater Accra and Western Regions, according to a press release dated Sunday, May 18, 2025.

The statement, signed by Acting Director General Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, emphasized that these recent infections are unrelated to the first two cases detected earlier this month.

“There is no epidemiological link between the new cases and the previously reported ones,” the statement clarified.

In response, Regional Health Directorates in both affected areas have initiated contact tracing and rolled out targeted public health interventions aimed at halting the spread of the virus.

Mpox, a contagious viral illness, is transmitted through close contact with infected individuals, animals, or contaminated items. The GHS statement outlined key symptoms, noting: “Common symptoms include rash, fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes.”

Health authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant, adhere to proper hand hygiene, avoid physical contact with symptomatic individuals, and promptly report suspected cases to the nearest health facility.

Media outlets were also called upon to join the public health effort. The GHS and Ministry of Health appealed to broadcasters and publishers to help spread factual information and educate communities on how to prevent Mpox transmission.

“The Government of Ghana remains committed to safeguarding public health. Drawing on our experience in managing similar outbreaks, we will continue to implement appropriate measures to protect the health and well-being of all residents,” the GHS assured.

The update comes just days after Ghana’s first two Mpox cases were disclosed in a May 15 release. Health officials continue to reassure the public of their preparedness, citing lessons learned from previous epidemics to guide current containment strategies.
