GPRTU hints at fare reductions as Cedi strengthens; final talks underway
Ghanaian commuters could soon see lower transport fares, as the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) signals that fare reductions are on the horizon—thanks to the strengthening of the cedi against the US dollar.
Abass Imoro, Industrial Relations Officer for GPRTU, shared the update during an interview with Channel One News on Monday, May 19. He said fare negotiations with the Ministry of Transport are progressing steadily, with a crucial follow-up meeting expected on Tuesday, May 20.
“It was a marathon meeting. The Transport Ministry is looking for some percentage, and the transport operators are also looking for some percentage. Finally, we closed halfway. We are going back, and tomorrow we will come and meet them on the final decision,” he explained.
Imoro assured commuters that the discussions are geared toward easing their financial burden by aligning fares with the improving exchange rate.
“The meeting is about the reduction in fares, so the public should rest assured that we will give them a smiley reduction,” he said.
While specific figures remain under wraps, both the ministry and transport unions appear to be moving toward a compromise that will offer tangible relief to passengers across the country.
