Abochi Shares the Real-Life Love Story That Inspired His Hit Song ‘Bestie’

Ghanaian musician and songwriter Bismark Enyan, popularly known as Abochi, has revealed that his hit single Bestie was born out of a deeply personal experience with love and friendship.

Appearing on ‘U Cook’ on UTV, hosted by Empress Gifty, Abochi explained that the touching lyrics came from his relationship with a close female friend he eventually developed romantic feelings for.

“I had a close female friend who I used to talk to almost all the time. As you’re close to the opposite sex, you tend to develop feelings because you get used to each other. But then, I didn’t know how to tell her, so I decided to put it into music,” he recalled.

The artist confessed that fear of rejection and the thought of ruining their friendship stopped him from confessing his feelings directly.

“With this kind of friendship, sometimes when you profess your love to her and she doesn’t feel the same way, it will jeopardize the friendship, which was my fear. I felt it would be better to write a song about us, but I didn’t expect it to go viral that fast,” he explained.

According to Abochi, the song unexpectedly led to an emotional confrontation with his friend, which opened the door to a brief romantic relationship between them.

“She listened to the song and confronted me. She asked me if she was the reason for dropping the song, and at that point, I had no choice but to confess that I had feelings for her. She was actually blushing, and we dated for some time. After a while, I realized we were better as friends,” he revealed.

Their relationship, however, did not last. Abochi shared that despite their attempt to return to friendship, things were never the same.

“Things that we would have tolerated in friendship, we couldn’t tolerate anymore. Everything changed, and we quarreled a lot. So we both agreed to quit and go back to being friends, but unfortunately, the friendship didn’t work either, so we had to go our separate ways,” he added.
