Chairman Wontumi Granted GH¢1 Million Bail After CID Interrogation

Chairman Wontumi

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chairman Wontumi, has been granted bail after honouring an invitation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

Wontumi, known in private life as Bernard Antwi Boasiako, was granted bail set at GH¢1 million with two sureties, which he has reportedly already fulfilled. Authorities confirmed that Wontumi is expected to face three mining-related charges on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at the High Court in Accra.

The NPP regional chairman appeared before the CID on Monday, October 6, following an order by Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine, who had warned that he would be arrested if he failed to report for questioning over alleged illegal mining activities.

Speaking to the press, his lead counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, said his client remains cooperative with the investigation but will strongly oppose any attempt to revoke his current police enquiry bail. “Any such move will be vigorously resisted,” he cautioned.
