Akosua Serwaa Orders Appeal After Court Recognises Two Lumba Wives, According to Lawyer

Akosua Serwaa - Daddy Lumba and Odo Broni

Lawyer William Kusi has stated that his client, Akosua Serwaa, has already directed him to challenge the recent High Court ruling that recognised both her and Odo Broni as wives of the late highlife musician Daddy Lumba.

He said the judgment is one he finds deeply troubling and professionally unacceptable.

According to Kusi, his conversation with Akosua Serwaa, who lives in Germany, took place shortly after the ruling was delivered. She instructed him to file an appeal in a higher court, a step he says will move forward immediately after he receives the more than 70-page judgment expected on December 1, 2025.

“I am a learned person, and I can’t align myself with decisions which are scandalous and I cannot defend. I just spoke with my client, and she said we should appeal against it, and I agree with her. We will prosecute and appeal,” William Kusi told Dadzie TV.

He then outlined the basis of the court’s decision. The judge found that the marriage certificate presented as evidence of the German marriage between Akosua Serwaa and Daddy Lumba did not bear the signatures of the two individuals, making it insufficient. The judge stressed that marriage in Germany must be proven through proper documentation rather than verbal claims.

“She said Akosua Serwaa was unable to prove that she married Lumba in Germany. In fact, she said something like, ‘As for marriage in Germany, it is proven by documents, so if someone claims by just word of mouth that they got married in Germany, it’s not enough unless there is documentation.’ She added that the documents we brought to court cannot be accepted because Akosua Serwaa’s and Lumba’s signatures are not in them,” he explained.

Kusi also revealed that the judge made remarks implying that he and his client had presented forged materials, a comment he says struck directly at his professional reputation.

“The most scandalous part of her statement was that she said we only went to forge some documents to claim it is a certificate, which impugns our integrity as lawyers. To me, it’s scandalous,” he added.

The High Court ruling on November 28, 2025, concluded that both Akosua Serwaa and Priscila Ofori, also known as Odo Broni, qualified as surviving spouses of the late musician. This followed a petition in which Akosua Serwaa asked the court to declare her the only recognized wife and the sole claimant to widowhood rights, while also seeking to stop Odo Broni and the Ekuona family head from recognising any other marital claim.

However, the court found that she failed to prove her case because she did not submit original copies of her marriage certificate. Presiding Judge Dorinda Smith Arthur ruled that the evidence presented “fell short of Sections 136 and 161,” noting that the Bornheim Marriage Registry certificate and the required confirmation from the Ghana Embassy in Germany were not provided in their original form. Only an extract had been submitted.
