Award-winning actress and television host Nana Ama McBrown has made it clear that marriage is no longer part of her future plans, following her recent confirmation that her 12-year marriage to Maxwell Mensah has officially ended.

In an exclusive discussion with Cookie Tee on TV3’s Newsday, the veteran media personality said her decision comes from lived experience rather than resentment. She described marriage, especially within the public eye, as demanding and often underestimated.

“Cookie, I won’t marry again. Do you know why? I was married for a good 12 years, and I must say it hasn’t been easy,” she said. “This celebrity lifestyle we live, if you see a celebrity who has been married for a long time and is still doing well, you need to applaud that person because it’s not easy.”

While ruling out remarriage, McBrown noted that she remains open to having another child if she chooses. She emphasized that her outlook is deeply personal and shaped by reflection on her own journey.

The actress revealed that her marriage to Maxwell Mensah came to a calm and mutual end after both partners felt emotionally exhausted. She stressed that their separation was peaceful and did not involve hostility or conflict.

According to McBrown, divorce does not have to be defined by bitterness or legal battles, a belief reflected in her continued relationship with her former husband and his family.

“Divorce isn’t hatred for each other. Marriage shouldn’t always be about going to court or being nasty and all that brouhaha,” she explained.

She disclosed that she still visits Maxwell Mensah’s relatives and maintains close ties with them. “I visit his family, and he does the same with mine. I talk to his children and even go to his mum’s shop at Makola to buy lace or anything I want,” she said.

When asked whether she would consider reconciling if her former husband sought to return, McBrown spoke warmly of him while maintaining that their marriage had run its course. She revealed that she still wears her wedding ring at his suggestion, as he believes there is a possibility they may reunite someday. She added that if marriage were ever to happen again, it would only be with Maxwell, should “magic happen,” but she firmly ruled out dating or marrying anyone else.

“Oh, Maxwell is a correct guy. I still love or like him, but we were both tired of the marriage and decided to go our separate ways,” she said. “In our 12 years of marriage, we fought only once, in Brazil, and we later made up. He has never beaten me or insulted me. He is a real gentleman. It’s the marriage that didn’t work.”

McBrown further revealed that despite the divorce, Maxwell Mensah continues to handle some of her affairs, highlighting the trust and mutual respect that still exists between them. She explained that sharing her story publicly was intentional, aimed at changing perceptions around divorce and showing that separation does not always have to be damaging.

She also used the platform to encourage young women to prioritize independence and self-development, urging them not to depend solely on men for financial security.

“I want young women to work and better themselves. Don’t wait for men or depend on them. So that when they are no more, you can move on and not be broke,” Nana Ama McBrown advised.
