Ofori Amponsah has stated that the defining chapter of his music career remains the period he worked closely with the late highlife great Daddy Lumba, a phase he says stands above every other achievement he has recorded over the years.
During a discussion on Talkertainment with Elsie Lamar on GhanaWeb TV, the seasoned musician revisited his early rise in the industry, crediting his partnership with Daddy Lumba as the most fulfilling and impactful stage of his journey.
“When I came out with Daddy Lumba, the songs we wrote together were my highest point. Later, I released good songs like ‘Cinderella’ and ‘Otoolege’. They were equally good, but working with Daddy Lumba was my sweetest time,” he said.
Amponsah indicated that the experience went far beyond studio sessions and hit records. He described Daddy Lumba as a mentor who challenged him to think bigger, sharpen his craft, and believe in his own potential within the music space.
“He made me see possibilities. He encouraged me to be the best that I can be, and I will miss him so much. He was a great gift to this nation and to the world,” he said.
Discussing the artists who shaped his musical foundation, Amponsah identified Daddy Lumba and Kojo Antwi as his strongest influences, explaining that their work played a central role in how he developed his songwriting style.
“I grew up listening to Daddy Lumba and Kojo Antwi. I especially wrote songs around Kojo Antwi’s songs. They are my icons,” he stated.
The singer also shared his reaction to Daddy Lumba’s demise, admitting that he struggled to accept the news at first. He described the late icon as a father figure whose loss has left a lasting gap in Ghana’s music industry.
“I didn’t believe it at first, but when I later confirmed it, I knew my father was gone. There is no one to fill these shoes.
“He is one of the greatest singers Ghana has ever known, and it will take a long time for someone to fill the void he has left,” Ofori Amponsah averred.
