Two Arrested After Police Stop Bus Carrying 2,600 Rounds of AK-47 Ammunition

Police arrested a driver and his mate after uncovering 2,600 rounds of AK-47 ammunition on their bus.

Police have arrested two men after uncovering a large cache of ammunition on a commercial bus traveling from Accra to northern Ghana.

The arrest was made on December 26, 2025, during a routine security check at the Asankare police barrier in the Ashanti Region. Officers stopped a Kia Granbird bus with registration number GT 5771 18, which was en route to Walewale and later expected to continue to Paga.

A thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 2,600 rounds of AK-47 ammunition concealed inside two containers. Further inspection revealed additional items hidden beneath the driver’s seat, including two bulletproof plates, a black helmet, and a pair of long boots, the Ghana Police Service disclosed in a statement.

The suspects were identified as the driver, Kwame Afram, and his mate, Godfred Essel. Both men were taken into custody on suspicion of unlawful possession of ammunition.

Police say the suspects are currently assisting with investigations as efforts continue to determine the source and intended destination of the weapons.

The bus involved in the operation, along with all recovered items, has been seized by authorities.
