Boardroom Tensions Boil Over as Man United Sack Ruben Amorim

Ruben Amorim

Manchester United have parted ways with Ruben Amorim, bringing his short spell at Old Trafford to an abrupt end.

The decision follows Sunday’s 1-1 Premier League draw with Leeds, a result that left United sitting sixth in the table. That match proved to be Amorim’s final outing in the dugout.

With the season still in progress, the club is set to turn to an internal solution. Darren Fletcher, who currently oversees the Under-18 side, is expected to step in as interim manager and will lead the team for the remainder of the campaign. His first assignment comes quickly, with Burnley visiting on Wednesday night.

Amorim’s departure comes after he publicly alluded to tension behind the scenes. Speaking after the Leeds game, the Portuguese coach suggested there had been confusion over his authority at the club, stressing that he was appointed as manager rather than head coach.

‘It’s going to be like this for 18 months or when the board decide to change,’ Amorim added. ‘That was my point, I want to finish with that. I’m not going to quit. I will do my job until another guy is coming here to replace me.’

Manchester United later confirmed the split in an official statement.

‘Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.

‘Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.

‘With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.

‘The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.

‘Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.’
