Efya Demands Harsh Justice for Sexual Offenders, Calls for Castration

Efya

Ghanaian singer Efya has spoken against sexual violence and online harassment, insisting that the punishments for offenders should be far harsher. She suggested extreme measures, including castration, for those who commit such crimes.

In an interview with BBC Pidgin, Efya criticized the current legal system, describing it as too lenient to deter perpetrators. She expressed frustration over how rape suspects are frequently granted bail and reintegrated into society.

“We should get some drastic punishments for those who commit gender-based abuse. Some of these people, when they get arrested, are granted bail and are allowed out into society to do that. It doesn’t serve as a deterrent to them or others,” she said.

Efya went further, proposing severe consequences for sexual offenders. “I wish that those who commit rape should be castrated,” she stated.

Addressing online harassment, the singer said she chooses not to engage with negativity, pointing out that it neither benefits her financially nor contributes to her peace of mind. “I don’t pay attention to negativity; it doesn’t bring me money or peace of mind. As for those who bully others online, their time will come,” she added.

Known for her song ‘Best in Me,’ Efya has consistently voiced her concerns about sexual harassment, particularly against minors. Her comments highlight the global conversation on justice for sexual offenses; some countries, including Pakistan, South Korea, the Czech Republic, and Madagascar, legally allow castration for convicted rapists.
