Seven Killed, 18 Injured in Fiery Cape Coast–Takoradi Highway Collision

Seven people died and 18 were injured after a Sprinter bus and Man Diesel truck collided head-on at Komenda Asamasa.

A fatal traffic crash along the Cape Coast–Takoradi Highway has left seven people dead and at least 18 others nursing injuries after a Sprinter bus and a Man Diesel truck slammed into each other at Komenda Asamasa.

The collision happened on Monday, January 12, 2026, at about 7:25 pm, turning a busy stretch of the highway into a scene of devastation.

In a statement shared on its Facebook page, the Ghana National Fire Service said firefighters from the Komenda Fire Station rushed to the location and rescued six passengers who were trapped inside the Sprinter bus after it veered off the road and plunged into a nearby bush.

Victims confirmed dead included three women, one of whom was pregnant, a baby and three men. They were all pronounced dead on arrival at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital. A female passenger who had been taken to the hospital earlier also succumbed to her injuries, bringing the total number of fatalities to seven.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the Man Diesel truck, with registration number GS 8394 Y, was travelling from Takoradi towards Cape Coast when it reportedly lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle, crashing head-on into the oncoming Sprinter bus, registered GS 6705-21.

Eighteen other passengers sustained varying degrees of injury and were rescued by bystanders before fire personnel arrived. They are currently receiving medical care.

After completing the rescue operation, GNFS officers cleared debris from the road to reopen the highway to traffic and prevent further incidents at the scene.
