Kennedy Agyapong Says Policy Depth Gives Him Upper Hand in NPP Race

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, one of five contenders seeking the New Patriotic Party’s presidential slot, has pitched his track record in job creation and policy development as the clearest reason delegates should back him when the party goes to the polls on Saturday.

The former Assin Central MP says his vision, coupled with years of political experience, puts him ahead of the rest of the field as the NPP searches for a flagbearer to lead it into the 2028 general election. He has expressed strong confidence that the mood within the party favours his bid.

“I am very confident that with the help of God, I will win convincingly,” he told the Daily Graphic.

Mr Agyapong, who finished second in the party’s 2023 presidential primary, said his campaign message has gained wide acceptance among delegates and believes that support will be reflected at the ballot box.

“I am the most formidable person to beat the (governing party) NDC in 2028. I am the most experienced and prepared to do so,” he said.

He outlined an agenda focused on transforming Ghana into a sustainable industrialised economy, with agriculture and tourism as key pillars. According to him, a mindset shift anchored on discipline and a firm stance against corruption distinguishes his leadership approach from that of his rivals.

Mr Agyapong also pointed to his proposal to relocate selected ministries to strategically chosen regions as evidence of his commitment to balanced national development and socio-economic redistribution.

On economic management, he said a government under his leadership would draw on top expertise in financial economics to overhaul Ghana’s policy framework. He argued that deep-rooted structural challenges would be tackled head-on.

“High public sector wages but less productivity, raw material economy, negative effective tax rate economy, fragile and weak fiscal framework, meritocracy, expenditure-controlled economy, less private sector involvement, short-term socio-economic policies, etc., will be addressed,” he said.

He added that his policy proposals were grounded in extensive research and data analysis.

“I have solid policies out of well researched, collected data and developed value chains to build a new economic framework for Ghana,” he said.

Mr Agyapong maintained that his policy package was not only attractive but practical, and tailored to the expectations of party delegates and the wider Ghanaian electorate.

He said his broad appeal among the youth, women and other segments of society, combined with his long involvement in politics, popularity and unifying instincts, would work in his favour.

“I have the qualities to unify the NPP and make it the formidable political party to recapture power from the NDC,” he said.

“All the hurt stakeholders in NPP will be urged to come back,” he added.

Describing himself as a loyal party man, Mr Agyapong said he has served the NPP consistently since 1992 and remains deeply committed to its growth and cohesion.

Saturday’s primary comes at a time when the party is also pursuing significant internal reforms. In July 2025, the NPP scheduled a National Delegates Conference to deliberate on about 50 proposed constitutional amendments intended to strengthen party structures.

One of the major proposals seeks to abolish the Special Electoral College previously used in presidential primaries and to significantly broaden the voting base. The expanded electoral college would draw from a wide spectrum of party leadership and affiliated groups, including national, regional and constituency executives, polling station officers, elders, patrons, MPs, ministers, deputy ministers, local government heads, TESCON representatives and members of the party’s special organs.

In all, 211,849 delegates are expected to vote at 333 polling centres across 276 constituencies nationwide, as well as at the party’s headquarters. Polls are scheduled to open at 7 a.m. and close at 2 p.m.
