Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged as the New Patriotic Party’s presidential flagbearer after clinching victory in the party’s nationwide primaries held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, positioning himself to lead the NPP into the next general elections.

The former Vice President secured 110,645 votes, translating into 56.48 per cent of all valid ballots cast, a clear majority that sealed his win over four contenders.

Electoral Commission officials formally confirmed the outcome at the party’s headquarters following the collation of results from constituencies across the country. According to figures announced by the EC, a total of 196,462 votes were cast nationwide, with 561 ballots rejected.

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, the former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, placed second after polling 46,554 votes, representing 23.76 per cent. He was followed by former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr Bryan Acheampong, who obtained 36,303 votes, equivalent to 18.53 per cent.

Former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum garnered 1,999 votes, accounting for 1.02 per cent, while former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyapong trailed with 402 votes, or 0.21 per cent.

The exercise drew significant participation, with more than 211,000 delegates voting at over 300 polling centres nationwide, underscoring what party officials described as an intensely competitive internal contest, according to Myjoyonline report.

Dr Bawumia went into the primaries against a field that included Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, and businessman and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

Voting took place across all 16 regions of Ghana, as delegates selected the candidate tasked with leading the NPP’s effort to reclaim power in the 2028 general elections.
