“My Kids Are Like My Friends” – D-Black on Snapchat, Music, and Modern Parenting

Award-winning rapper and businessman D-Black is embracing a modern approach to fatherhood, one he says feels more like friendship than authority.

During a discussion on Joy Prime’s 4Kidz Paradise, the artiste reflected on how raising children today looks nothing like his own childhood. For him, the biggest shift is not just attitude but technology.

“My kids are like my friends. It’s interesting how you guys are so different from us in our generation. I talk to them every day and none of them even messages me on WhatsApp. They’re on my Snapchat, they talk to me on Snapchat,” he said.

D-Black admitted that he had to adjust to his children’s preferred mode of communication. While he was comfortable using WhatsApp, they were clearly not.

“It was very surprising to realise that when I text them on WhatsApp, they would reply the next day, but when I text them on Snapchat, they would reply instantly,” he stated.

Beyond social media habits, he also pointed to a wider generational change in how parents and children connect, particularly through music. Growing up, he said, shared playlists were almost unthinkable in his household.

“It’s very interesting to see how they grow and their career paths. Growing up, I didn’t have a common musician with my mum and dad. My parents and I couldn’t like the same musicians. They would probably like Amakye Dede and I will be talking about Reggie Rockstone,” he explained.

That gap, he noted, no longer exists in his home. His daughter, in particular, keeps him updated on trending sounds, and the exchange goes both ways.

“Now, my daughter tells me the new music that’s out and I like the songs. I would also tell her the new songs I’ve heard and she would also like the songs so we even go to concerts together. It’s very interesting and fun to be part of their lives,” D-Black further stated.
