Some Record Deals Are ‘Death Traps’ – Queen eShun Cautions Up-and-Coming Artistes

Ghanaian singer and songwriter Ethel Esi Eshun, widely known as Queen eShun, is cautioning rising talents against rushing into record deals that could cost them their creative and professional independence. In her view, some agreements in the industry function less as opportunities and more as restraints.

During a discussion on Starr Showbiz with Feeling Daddy on Starr 103.5 FM, the vocalist opened up about her own journey and why she ultimately chose to steer her career without being tied to a label.

“I realised that managers are looking at their interests, and sometimes that can affect you even more,” she said. “These contracts are death traps. They trap you for a long time. They take your freedom. It kind of stops you from singing for a while. You can’t even release your songs. It’s a whole mess.”

Drawing from that experience, Queen eShun advised artistes to scrutinise any document placed before them. While she acknowledged that management teams and distribution partnerships can add value, she stressed the importance of understanding every clause before committing.

“If you do get a contract, have a lawyer look through it. If they think it’s a great deal, then go ahead. But usually, there are hidden clauses that you overlook, and at the moment you sign, it traps you,” she explained.

The singer recounted how, after stepping away from music to focus on her education, she returned to the scene operating independently under the name “Queenie Shawn Music,” handling her own business affairs. That period, she suggested, gave her clarity and control.

“It’s better for you to do something on your own. You get your team on board, but it’s still your thing. It makes the job easier and gives you peace of mind,” she said.

Beyond contracts, Queen eShun warned that misalignment between an artiste and their management can create tension over sound, image and long term direction. Without a team that genuinely understands the creative vision, she believes the partnership can do more harm than good.

“If you don’t get a team that understands you, your brand, your style, your goal, your voice, your power, it will mess you up,” Queen eShun cautioned.
