Final rites for veteran gospel musician Yaw Sarpong have been scheduled, with his family outlining a three-day programme to honour his life and legacy.

Details released in a video on social media indicate that activities will begin with a wake at Asuofua Town Park on May 8, 2026. The same venue will host the funeral and burial the following day, May 9.

“We have planned that there will be a wake-keeping for Yaw Sarpong on May 8. The funeral and burial ceremony will be held on May 9, 2026, at Asuofua Town Park.
“On May 10, there will be a thanksgiving service at Sokoban, and after the church service, the family will meet to account for all expenses incurred during the funeral service,” the family said.

The family is calling on the public to stand with them during the final send-off.

“We therefore invite all Ghanaians and sympathisers to attend and support us as we give our beloved Yaw Sarpong a final farewell,” they added.

Yaw Sarpong died on January 20, 2026, following a prolonged illness. His passing was confirmed by his manager, Nana Poku Ashis.

Across a career that spanned close to five decades, he became a defining voice in Ghana’s gospel scene. His debut album, “Adesrede”, released in 1981, marked the beginning of a catalogue that would include well-known tracks such as “Awurade Kasa”, “Tie Obiaa”, and “Wo Haw Ne Sen”.

Beyond his solo work, he established the Asomafo gospel group, which played a key role in shaping the direction and influence of Akan gospel music in the country.
