Calls for unity have long echoed across the global music and creative industries, with artists and industry players often presenting it as a key ingredient for progress. But Ghanaian rapper M.anifest believes the concept is overrated and largely unnecessary.
According to the award-winning musician, what many people describe as unity is often an illusion, frequently invoked by individuals seeking support for their own interests rather than the collective good of the industry.
Sharing his thoughts in a post on X, the rapper, popularly known as “The God MC,” argued that the creative space would benefit more from cooperation, professionalism and sound business principles than from repeated calls for unity.
“We don’t need unity in our music/creative scene. Unity is a myth and a banner often waved by selfish people when they want everyone to rally behind them. What we need is cooperation, a modicum of ethical behaviour, quality control, ball knowledge, as well as application of best practices creatively and in business,” M.anifest wrote.
His remarks challenge a common narrative within the entertainment industry, where appeals for solidarity are often made during periods of disagreement, competition or industry-wide campaigns. For M.anifest, however, meaningful collaboration and adherence to high standards offer a more practical path forward than the pursuit of a unity he considers unrealistic.
