NPP Raises Alarm Over Alleged EOCO Arrest of Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Demands Immediate Release

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is demanding the immediate release of its communications team member, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, after alleging that he was arrested by officials of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) with support from officers of the Ghana Immigration Service.

The allegation was made by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, in a Facebook post on Sunday, July 12, 2026.

EOCO had also not released any official statement on the matter at the time of publication, leaving the reason for the alleged detention unclear.

According to Mr Kodua, Mr Aboagye was picked up at the airport and taken into EOCO custody, where his lawyers have allegedly been denied access to him.

“Officers of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), with the help of Immigration officers, arrested Dennis Miracles Aboagye at the airport and took him into custody. Since then, they have denied his lawyers access, and his whereabouts are not disclosed, with no charges proffered,” he wrote.

Mr Aboagye, who recently announced his decision to contest for the position of National Communications Officer of the NPP, has built a reputation as one of the party’s vocal media figures and political commentators.

Mr Kodua described the alleged arrest as an act of political intimidation, accusing the government of using state institutions against opposition voices.

“Let us be clear about what this is. It is not law enforcement. It is intimidation,” he stated.

The NPP General Secretary further argued that Mr Aboagye’s recent public criticisms of government policies may have influenced the alleged action against him.

“Dennis Miracles Aboagye is one of the loudest and most effective critics of this government. He has asked hard questions about galamsey. He has challenged this administration’s record. He announced his candidacy for a leadership position in our party only hours ago. And now he sits in EOCO custody,” he wrote.

The party has called on EOCO to either release Mr Aboagye immediately or present him before a court if there are legitimate grounds for prosecution.

“That EOCO release Dennis Miracles Aboagye immediately, or charge him and put him before a court of competent jurisdiction as the Constitution requires,” the statement said.

Mr Kodua also demanded that the detained communicator be granted access to his lawyers and family members without restrictions.

“That he be granted unrestricted access to his lawyers and his family, without further delay. Article 14(2) of the 1992 Constitution is not a suggestion,” he wrote.

The NPP further accused the government of engaging in what it described as a pattern of politically motivated actions against opposition members through state agencies.

“That this government end the pattern of politically motivated invitations, arrests and detentions targeted at members of the New Patriotic Party,” he stated.

Directing his final remarks at EOCO and those responsible for its operations, Mr Kodua warned against using state institutions for political purposes.

“We say to EOCO and to those directing it: institutions of state are not private weapons. Ghanaians are watching, and Ghana’s institutions will outlive this government.”

He, however, appealed to NPP supporters to remain calm as the party continues to seek clarity on the matter.
