The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with a robbery at Asabi in the Asokore Mampong Municipality after officers on night patrol tracked him down moments after the alleged attack.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, police said the incident happened around 12:20 a.m. on July 21, when a routine patrol team received a report that a robbery victim had been left unconscious near the Presbyterian Church at Asabi after his mobile phone was taken.
Officers quickly moved to the location, where the suspect reportedly tried to escape after spotting the patrol team. He allegedly ran into an uncompleted building in an attempt to evade arrest.
“The patrol team proceeded immediately to the scene. Upon seeing the police, the suspect fled and hid in an uncompleted building. He was pursued and arrested,” the statement said.
The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Ahmed Mustapha, was arrested after the brief chase.
Police said officers searched him and recovered the victim’s mobile phone together with a machete believed to have been used during the robbery.
“A search conducted on him led to the retrieval of the complainant’s mobile phone and a machete, both of which have been retained as exhibits,” the statement added.
The victim suffered machete wounds to the forehead, neck and left hand during the attack and was rushed to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Hospital for emergency treatment.
Investigators later returned to the hospital to check on his condition.
“At about 5:30 am on the same date, the victim was visited at the hospital. He had regained consciousness, was in a stable condition, and continues to receive medical care under observation,” the statement indicated.
