Ghanaian content creator Kofi Gharbin, popularly known as Mr Happiness, has urged men to make cooking a basic life skill before getting married, arguing that anyone who intends to lead a family should be capable of preparing meals without relying on a spouse.
Speaking during an interview on Hitz FM on July 22, 2026, the Netherlands-based content creator rejected the long-held belief that cooking is solely a woman’s responsibility. According to him, every man should be able to feed himself and care for his household regardless of his marital status.
“I love cooking. Food is life. The stomach is the centre of life. Why would you give that part of your life for somebody else to control?” he said.
Mr Happiness maintained that marriage should not be an excuse for men to abandon essential domestic responsibilities, saying husbands ought to remain self-sufficient even after bringing a wife into the home.
“As a man, you are the head of the house. You have to know how to cook before you bring a helper, a woman, into your life,” he stated.
To reinforce his point, he spoke about situations where a wife may be unable to cook, including after childbirth or during illness. In such moments, he said, a husband who lacks basic cooking skills could struggle to care for the family.
“If you don’t know how to cook, don’t marry. If you are married and you have your first child, maybe your mother will come and help. Two or three years later, you decide to have your second child. If your wife is at the hospital and your first child is hungry, as the husband, will I have to call my mother to come and cook?” he questioned.
Mr Happiness also referenced the Bible, saying its description of a woman as a helper suggests that a man should already be capable of managing his household before marriage rather than depending entirely on his wife.
“The Bible says the man leads and the woman is the helper. For you to get a helper means you are already doing something effectively. A man who cannot handle his home shouldn’t marry,” he further stated.
