MoMo Dominates Ghana’s Payments as Transactions Surge to GHS492.9bn

MTN Mobile Money

Mobile money continued to widen its lead over traditional payment methods in Ghana in June 2026, with transactions hitting 954 million and reaching a total value of GHS492.9 billion, Bank of Ghana data show.

The scale of mobile money activity dwarfed cheque usage during the month. Cheque transactions stood at just 406,000, with a combined value of GHS35.7 billion, according to the latest Summary of Economic and Financial Data released by the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

The figures point to the growing dominance of mobile money in Ghana’s payment landscape, both in transaction volume and value.

Mobile money transaction value rose sharply from GHS323.2 billion in June 2025 to GHS492.9 billion in June 2026, representing a significant increase over the 12-month period.

The customer base also expanded. Registered mobile money accounts increased from 76.4 million in June 2025 to 84.6 million in June 2026. Of these, 26.4 million accounts were active during the month.

Funds held in mobile money wallets also reached a new high. The total float climbed from GHS28.9 billion in June 2025 to GHS40 billion in June 2026, underscoring the growing amount of money circulating through mobile payment platforms.

The agent network expanded alongside the rise in transactions, with registered mobile money agents reaching one million. Active agents accounted for 546,000 of that total.

Mobile Money Interoperability also recorded substantial activity during the period. The system, which allows customers to transfer funds between different telecommunications networks, processed 33.5 million transactions worth GHS6.2 billion in June 2026, GNA reported.
