Plans are underway to rename Ghana’s main aviation hub, as the government prepares legislation that could see Kotoka International Airport rebranded as Accra International Airport.
The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, revealed the proposal during a Parliamentary Leadership media briefing on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, where he outlined key legislative measures expected to be introduced during the ongoing parliamentary sitting.
According to Mr Ayariga, the proposed renaming is among several bills and regulatory measures scheduled for consideration by lawmakers in the current session. He explained that the initiative will be formally presented to the House by the Minister for Transport, who will seek parliamentary approval for the change.
Ghana’s parliamentary processes require that any alteration to the name of a government facility must secure legislative endorsement before it can take effect. If passed, the move would trigger updates across official government documentation and aviation-related records.
Kotoka International Airport currently functions as the country’s leading international airport, serving as the central entry and exit point for passenger travel, cargo movement and official diplomatic travel.
Mr Ayariga did not provide a specific timeline for when the bill would be introduced, but noted that it forms part of the Transport Ministry’s legislative agenda for the parliamentary meeting that commenced today, Graphic Online reported.
