Backlash has trailed Ghanaian rapper Medikal after he used his acceptance speech at the 2026 Telecel Ghana Music Awards to dedicate his Hiplife/Hip-hop Artiste of the Year win to his son, Space.
The moment came as he received the award, with the rapper crediting his recent creative drive and success to inspiration from his child.
“I’m dedicating this award to my son Space, because he inspired me to record this song. Forget everybody,” he said.
His comment quickly set off debate across social media platforms, where users questioned his choice to mention only one of his children during the dedication.
Medikal is a father of two. His first child, Island, is with actress and entrepreneur Fella Makafui. Critics noted that he has not publicly dedicated any major award to her in similar fashion, which added to the conversation online.
Others also pointed out that his son, Space, is from his past relationship with Ghanaian singer Eazzy Baby, suggesting the gesture came across as selective to some fans.
Some social media users argued that the controversy could have been avoided if the rapper had referred broadly to “his children” rather than naming only one during his speech.
Still, not everyone agreed with the criticism. A section of fans defended Medikal, insisting that award dedications are personal moments and he was within his right to honour whoever he felt inspired him at the time.
