Ghanaian singer Sista Afia has pushed back against a popular assumption about women in relationships, saying she has never relied on a partner for financial support, even when dating.
Speaking in an interview on Kumasi-based Angel FM, the “Weather” singer said she is fully financially independent and sees no need to request money from any man she is involved with.
“I’ve never asked any man for any amount of money before. When I’m dating a man, I don’t ask them for MoMo because I make my own money, and I know I will always make my own money. It doesn’t matter if the man is rich; it will be worrying if I go with that mentality. I make my own money. If you want to buy for me, I will appreciate it, but don’t expect me to ask you for it,” she noted.
She added that some men in relationships prefer women who depend on them financially because it gives them a sense of control, a mindset she believes is misguided.
“Most Ghanaian men like to take care of a woman they can control. The IQ is low. If you get a hardworking woman who makes her own money, respects and loves you, why would you have that mentality that the woman will be competing with you?” she said.
On her dating life, Sista Afia said she is open-minded when it comes to the kind of men she considers, including corporate workers often called “9-5ers,” though she has yet to meet someone who truly understands her beyond her public image.
Sista Afia clarified that she is not actively looking for a relationship at the moment, but admitted she is deeply receptive to love and has, in the past, dated men who found her independence and celebrity status almost unbelievable because she does not ask for financial support.
