Government starts paying arrears owed to 2020 batch of nurses and midwives

Thousands of nurses and midwives from the 2020 cohort have begun receiving long-awaited financial relief after the Ministry of Health confirmed that three months of outstanding arrears have now been processed.

In a statement released on May 27, the Ministry said the payment forms part of an agreed schedule previously outlined by the Ministry of Finance, aimed at clearing arrears tied to recruitment and postings.

Officials indicated that the May 2026 tranche of payments was executed as planned, marking what they described as steady progress in settling the obligations.

The update comes after sustained concern within the nursing and midwifery community over delays that had sparked frustration among affected health workers across the country.

However, the Ministry noted that a small number of beneficiaries reported discrepancies, saying they had not received the full arrears expected under the three-month arrangement.

It described these cases as isolated and assured that corrective measures were underway to resolve them without further delays.

“The Ministry of Health is working closely with the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department to resolve the issue and to ensure that payments are made to these individuals, in addition to their June scheduled payments,” the statement said.

The Ministry also expressed gratitude to nurses and midwives nationwide for their patience and continued dedication to healthcare delivery throughout the process.

It further emphasized that health professionals remain central to Ghana’s healthcare system, while acknowledging ongoing concerns in the sector around salaries, conditions of service and welfare.

Additional updates on the payment rollout and any outstanding issues are expected to be communicated in the coming weeks.
