As Ghana received a group of citizens evacuated from South Africa, the Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Presidency, Kofi Okyere-Darko, has moved to calm fears among South Africans living in the country, insisting they will not face any form of reprisal.
In comments shared in an interview posted by Frontline on X, Okyere-Darko said while the situation in South Africa had been troubling for many Ghanaians, it would not trigger similar treatment on Ghanaian soil.
“Nothing is going to happen to South Africans living in Ghana. Their businesses will run as they should. We are not going to do anything about it,” he said.
He stressed Ghana’s long-held position as a welcoming hub on the continent, saying the country would continue to uphold that reputation for Africans and members of the diaspora alike.
“Ghana has always been the pathway into Africa. We mean every bit of it. The South Africans who live in Ghana, as long as they abide by the rules of this country, this is their home as well.
“If we are bringing diasporans back home to integrate into the Ghanaian and African societies, why not our brothers from South Africa?” he said.
Okyere-Darko also dismissed the possibility of anti-immigrant demonstrations targeting South Africans, describing such actions as unacceptable.
“There will not be any demonstration to send South Africans back home. That will not happen,” he stated.
His remarks come after Ghana evacuated about 300 nationals from South Africa in response to weeks of unrest and xenophobic violence in parts of the country.
