The public back-and-forth between Ghanaian music heavyweights Sarkodie and Stonebwoy has taken another turn, with Sarkodie pushing back against what he considers a misrepresentation of his earlier comments.
Sarkodie’s response follows a lengthy statement from Stonebwoy in which the dancehall musician questioned the rapper’s principles and recalled several interactions between them, including a phone conversation after Sarkodie’s RAH show in the UK.
Addressing Stonebwoy’s concerns, Sarkodie made it clear that he never suggested artistes should overlook disagreements simply because doing so could be beneficial to their careers.
“A lot to unpack here, but first things first there’s no need to say something I never said that artistes should play along so far as it benefits them.”
According to Sarkodie, the first question he asked Stonebwoy during their phone conversation remains the central issue for him.
“The first thing I asked you when we got on that call, and I still want to ask, is “What is your problem?” If, for any reason, you connected that post to yourself, that should tell me how you feel about everything else.”
The rapper also rejected suggestions that he has previously used social media to throw indirect shots at Stonebwoy.
“First off, there’s no post I’ve made in my life trying to shade you, and I don’t respond when fans want to make connections because I only care about your opinion, not what someone else makes it seem.”
Sarkodie suggested that people sometimes interpret statements through the lens of how they themselves would behave in similar circumstances. He said this was why he chose to respond to Stonebwoy, rather than to interpretations made by fans.
“People normally respond to things that possibly had nothing to do with them because they would have done the same thing themselves. I’m only responding to this because it’s coming directly from you.”
He further sought to downplay the idea that he is carrying a personal grudge against Stonebwoy, saying his attention is focused on issues he considers more important in his personal life.
“My G, let me say it again, just as I said on the phone there’s nothing in this industry I take to heart when I have real situations in real life to worry about.”
Sarkodie also addressed the issue of forgiveness and moving on from past disagreements. He said Stonebwoy has every right to decide who he forgives, but cannot dictate how other people choose to handle their own relationships.
“I told you that you don’t have to forgive and forget anyone if you don’t want to, because you have every right not to. But you also can’t control how someone else chooses to deal with situations. The only common goal we probably have is to win together if we can. And if we can’t, that’s good too.”
He acknowledged that people respond differently to conflict, noting that some matters may be easier for him to overlook while others require him to speak out.
“There are things I find easy to let slide, and there are things I feel I need to react to. We’re not all the same, and I’m okay with that.”
Sarkodie also pointed to his own actions as evidence that he does not consider Stonebwoy an enemy.
“If I had any issues with you, I wouldn’t have been the one to pick up the phone, call you, and invite you to my RAH show.”
He then brought up a point about their respective relationships within the Ghanaian music industry. Sarkodie noted that Stonebwoy associates with people who have allegedly disrespected him, but said he has never interpreted those associations as an endorsement of that behaviour.
“You hang out with people who have disrespected me, but there’s no way I would assume that means you support their disrespect towards me, because you have nothing to do with it. Yet you seem to feel I owe you something that simply doesn’t exist.”
According to Sarkodie, the latest disagreement is also not an isolated incident. He claimed Stonebwoy has raised similar concerns with him before, and that he has consistently chosen to address them privately.
“This is not the first time you’ve had these feelings, and every time you do, I take a deep breath, come to you, and we talk. Nobody even knows something happened until you did something that I know, if the situation were reversed, you wouldn’t let go of easily.”
Despite the recurring tension, Sarkodie said he continued to show support for Stonebwoy’s career and remained open to working together.
“And despite all of that, I still reached out about us doing shows together and bigged you up with every milestone you’ve achieved.”
For Sarkodie, the issue ultimately comes down to how his words have been interpreted. He accused Stonebwoy of assigning meaning to his comments that he did not intend.
“So there’s really no need to twist my words or make them mean something they don’t.”
He ended his response with a blunt dismissal of the idea that Stonebwoy needs to maintain a relationship with him.
“And my g you don’t need to fck with me I’m pretty sure I add no value to your life to even worry about me.”
