Ghanaian dancehall artiste Stonebwoy has responded to a recent message from rapper Sarkodie about fan loyalty and toxic behaviour, bringing their private conversations and differing perspectives on industry principles into the public spotlight.
Sarkodie had earlier cautioned artistes against embracing fans who attack other brands or personalities simply to elevate their favourite artistes.
He argued that genuine support does not require toxicity, while urging the current generation of SarkNation followers to learn from the older generation, which he said remained focused on the music, the movement and the brand.
“Be careful about entertaining that energy,” Sarkodie wrote in his post on X.
He acknowledged that passionate fans can sometimes go overboard, but stressed that artistes must also exercise restraint.
“Passion and loyalty don’t need toxicity to be effective,” he added.
The rapper also credited God, SarkNation and hard work for his longevity in music, while expressing his appreciation to his supporters.
Stonebwoy, however, appeared to take the conversation a step further by directly addressing Sarkodie and referencing a series of interactions between them.
According to Stonebwoy, he called Sarkodie the day after his RAH show in the UK to congratulate him, with the two speaking for more than 10 minutes.
He said their relationship remained cordial even after what he described as Sarkodie’s second social media video following Stonebwoy’s OVO performance, which he believed carried a particular message.
“Whatever message you meant to send across, only you can explain,” Stonebwoy wrote.
Stonebwoy said that after making what he described as a factual post on X, he still reached out to Sarkodie because the rapper had been sharing what appeared to him to be cryptic messages.
He disclosed that Sarkodie returned his call almost immediately. Although Stonebwoy initially missed the call, he said he called back and the pair subsequently spoke for more than an hour.
The discussion, according to Stonebwoy, covered the music industry, artiste behaviour and their different perspectives.
It was during that conversation, Stonebwoy claimed, that Sarkodie made his position clear on whether artistes could be expected to uphold certain principles.
“You were very clear about how no artiste could be “forced” to uphold any form of principle,” Stonebwoy stated.
He went on to explain his understanding of Sarkodie’s argument, saying artistes ultimately make decisions based on what benefits them, even when their priorities and values differ.
“That, literally, in our industry, artistes must play along so far as it benefits them, and it cannot matter how, because we all care about different things,” he added.
Stonebwoy then linked that position to the videos at the centre of their disagreement and argued that Sarkodie’s latest message about principles should also be examined in light of those earlier interactions.
“Standing on just these 2 videos for now, I believe this tweet of yours has been equally considered,” he wrote.
His strongest point came at the end of the response, where he questioned whether advice can carry weight when the person offering it does not consistently demonstrate the principle being advocated.
“And you will agree that without PRINCIPLE, advice is an OPINION,” Stonebwoy concluded.
