Actor John Peasah, widely recognised for his role as Drogba in the hit television series YOLO, has revealed that years of seeking medical help have brought little relief as he continues to battle the rare neurological disorder Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS).
Speaking on Onua Showtime, the actor disclosed that he has received treatment at about 12 hospitals, yet his condition remains largely unchanged. He also shared what he believes marked the beginning of his health ordeal.
According to John Peasah, the symptoms started after he experienced a sudden incident while carrying an object in his home. Although he is convinced that moment triggered the illness, medical specialists diagnosed him with Stiff Person Syndrome, the same rare condition that forced international music icon Celine Dion to step away from public life for a period.
“I was carrying something in my house when I suddenly heard a sound in my back. I believe that incident is what caused my condition, but the doctors say otherwise. They have diagnosed it as Stiff Person Syndrome, the same condition Celine Dion battled for some time, which kept her away from the public eye,” he said.
The actor said his search for treatment has been exhausting, with every hospital visit leading to another round of medical examinations, fresh diagnoses and new prescriptions. Despite the repeated interventions, he said he has seen little improvement.
“I have visited about 12 hospitals for a cure, and each time, they conduct tests and run diagnoses. They prescribe so many medications that after taking all of them, I feel full. So when food is served, I am unable to eat because I already feel satisfied,” Drogba of YOLO fame stated.
John Peasah further described how the illness has dramatically altered his life, revealing that he has spent the last six years mostly indoors because persistent pain and physical limitations have made it difficult to live normally.
Even with the prolonged struggle, he said he remains hopeful of making a full recovery and returning to everyday life.
To improve his chances of recovery, the actor is appealing for financial assistance to access specialised treatment abroad.
He explained that he needs about $88,000 to fund a three-month medical programme outside Ghana, saying the advanced treatment required for Stiff Person Syndrome is not readily available in the country.
