Road Accident Kills 44 People In Bono Region

A total of seventy-two (72) road accidents were recorded in the Bono Region between January and June 2021 resulting in 44 deaths.

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) Regional Commander, Superintendent Stephen Tenkorang revealed this in an exclusive interview on Nimdee FM’s morning show ‘Anopa Nimdee Adwasuo.’

According to Supt. Stephen Tenkorang, 51 cases were recorded in the 1st quarter from January to March which resulted in 21 fatal (deaths), 21 serious (extensive damages and injuries) and 9 minor injuries.

“A total of 85 vehicles were involved, 35 commercial, 14 private and 36 motor bikes. 23 deaths and 51 injuries. We recorded 21 cases in the 2nd quarter from April to June, out of this 16 were fatal, 18 serious and 13 minor. 68 vehicles were involved; 20 of them were commercial, 24 private and 24 motor bikes. 21 deaths and 64 injuries. In all we recorded 44 deaths in the 1st and 2nd quarters.”

Supt. Tenkorang indicated that, comparing this same period of 2021 to 2020, there has been a rise in cases.

He attributed the rise to several factors such as; abuse of road traffic regulations, wrong overtaking, poor vehicle maintenance culture, poor roads, breakdown of vehicles on our major roads, poor weather and misuse of motor bikes by riders.

He appealed to the general public to see this as a major concern and join hands with the MTTD and National Road Safety Authority to help protect lives and properties since they cannot do it alone.
