Sunyani West:Hectares of farm lands, Foodstuffs and Forest Reserves Destroyed By Bushfires

Hundreds of hectares of farm lands and forest reserves have been destroyed by bushfires in the Adounya and Boffourkrom Electoral Areas in the Sunyani West Municipality of the Bono Region.

During a visit to the Adounya and Boffourkrom Electoral Areas, two major farming areas, one could see the devastating effects of bushfire.

Hundreds of hectares of farms and arable lands have been destroyed by fire. Cocoa, cashew, plantain, cassava and maize have been burnt by bushfire.

Some farmers in the Adounya and Boffourkrom Electoral Areas who have lost their farm produce to bushfires been recounting their loses and are calling for more to be done to reduce bushfires in the area especially by driving away of nomads from the area whom they suspect as being the cause of the bushfires.

The Assembly Member for the Adounya Electoral Area and a farmer, Raymond Kayeele is calling for more efforts to prevent bushfires in the area.

“Bushfire has destroyed our farm produce, our maize, cassava have all been burnt. The nomads should be driven away because they have been causing some of these bushfires in the area.”

Augustine Dorney, a farmer at Pepewase speaking to First News said, “I went to church when I returned all my maize had been burnt by a bushfire. How to feed my family will be a big challenge for me. We need the Assembly to drive the nomads who set up these fires.”

Akua Prudence, a farmer at Adounya noted that, “My maize and cassava are all burnt. What to eat is a problem now. We are in a difficult time. The Fire Service should do something about this else this is what will happen every year.”

The devastating bushfires did not spare some forest reserves in the areas either. Part of the Tain II Forest Reserve has been destroyed by fire.
