Renowned broadcaster, Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey Santana has urged students to seek out for mentors in their respective fields of study and interests.
Addressing students in a summit organized by the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) Students’ Representative Council (SRC) in Sunyani, he emphasized that students need mentors that can help them navigate the challenges and complexities in their chosen fields to become successful leaders.
“Your mentor has been part of the journey you want to go. He know where the curves are, he know where the valleys are, and he know where the potholes are.’’

“So your mentor will tell you not to do this, let me show how I was able to build my house, let me tell you how I was able to do this. You need a mentor,’’ Abeiku recommended.
Abeiku Santana said mentorship is very important because it shaping and equip a person with capabilities that helps him/her to make informed decisions and build self-confidence to achieve their goals.
He urged students to demonstrate qualities that prospective mentors will use to identify and recognized them with and eventually begin to assist them grow.
“You just do not get up and become a leader. You must learn to serve. Your mentor must see some strength in you. Your mentor must trust you that this is the guy who will take over from me,’’ he advised.
The summit, was part of activities lined-up for this year’s UENR’s SRC Week celebration on the theme “Positioning the SRC as a revered stakeholder in decision making: the role of every junior member.’’
President of National Union of Ghana Students’ (NUGS), Dennis Appiah Larbi-Ampofo said is about time students across the country showcase their activism powers and advocate for serious development in the various universities campuses.
He however added that in advocating for the best, students should not forget that they are partners in every university’s development.

“As student leaders, we must go to the negotiation table as partners, brainstorming and finding solutions to problems that affect our people rather than having a pre-determined mind of opposing to everything management will table before us,’’ he said.
The Students’ Representative Council president for UENR, Emmanuel Swanzy-Baffoe explained that the theme for the 2023 SRC Week celebration aims to enhance awareness among students about their role and significance as stakeholders in decision-making processes to help shaping policies, advocating for students rights and improving the overall student experience.
He added that, “with the rising rate of disturbances amongst students on other university campuses and the resultant shrink of students’ democracy and freedom due to caveats and bans by the management of the affected institutions, the SRC considers conversations around this subject a matter of urgent importance.’’
