Adentan MCE wows tough action after floods claim three lives

Ella Esiman Nongo, the newly appointed Municipal Chief Executive for Adentan, has confirmed that three lives were lost in the municipality during Sunday’s devastating floods.

“In Lakeside, we lost two people, including a four-year-old girl at Nanakrom and a gentleman around New Legon,” she reportedly told Citi FM during a Monday morning interview.

The deaths have intensified scrutiny on Accra’s longstanding flood problem, often blamed on unchecked development and obstruction of natural watercourses. In response, Ms. Nongo signaled a firm shift in policy, vowing to confront the root causes by targeting unauthorized structures choking the city’s drainage paths.

“As we speak, some people have been trapped in their homes. Because a lot more people have built on our waterways, and that is not helping us. So, what we intend to do is to take a very drastic decision against it. It will be a decision that will hurt a few but save a lot of people,” she said, underlining the human toll and urgency of the crisis.

Ms. Nongo warned that demolition would be part of the municipality’s strategy, arguing that traditional flood-control efforts like dredging are no longer sufficient on their own.

“Demolition of properties will be part of what we will do, because dredging cannot continue. That alone might not solve the problem,” she said.

With residents still reeling from the latest flood disaster, the MCE’s remarks reflect a determination to prioritize long-term resilience—even if it means making unpopular decisions.
