Ghana was plunged into mourning on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, after a military helicopter crash claimed the lives of eight individuals, including two senior government ministers, sparking an outpouring of grief across the nation.
The crash, now deemed a national tragedy by the government, resulted in the untimely deaths of Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed. The aircraft, a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 utility helicopter, had departed from Accra en route to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region when it suddenly went off radar.
Among the others who perished in the wreckage were Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, the acting Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Minister of Food and Agriculture; Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC); Mr. Samuel Aboagye, a former Parliamentary candidate; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
As news of the incident spread, social media became a space of collective sorrow. Prominent figures from Ghana’s creative industry, Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, DKB, and George Quaye, joined the chorus of mourning, sharing tributes and heartfelt messages to honour the fallen.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces and aviation authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, which has shaken both the political establishment and the general public.
